Fall Prevention at Home: A Practical Guide for Las Vegas Seniors and Their Families
April 22, 2025 · 6 min read
Falls send more older adults to the hospital each year than any other type of injury, and many of the most common causes are preventable with relatively simple changes at home. Whether your parent plans to stay in their current home or you are evaluating whether a move makes sense, these fall prevention basics are worth addressing now.
Clear pathways and remove tripping hazards
Loose rugs, electrical cords across walkways, and clutter on the floor are among the most common causes of falls at home. Walk through your parent's home specifically looking for these hazards, room by room, rather than relying on memory of how the space looks.
Improve lighting, especially at night
Poor lighting, particularly in hallways and bathrooms used during nighttime trips, significantly increases fall risk. Motion-activated night lights along common nighttime routes are a low-cost, high-impact fix.
Install grab bars and non-slip surfaces in the bathroom
Bathrooms are one of the most common locations for falls, due to wet, slippery surfaces and the physical demands of getting in and out of a tub or shower. Grab bars near the toilet and shower, along with non-slip mats, meaningfully reduce risk and are inexpensive to install.
Review medications for side effects that affect balance
Many common medications, including some blood pressure medications and sleep aids, can cause dizziness or balance issues. A pharmacist or physician can review your parent's full medication list specifically for fall-risk interactions, which is worth doing at least annually.
Address vision and footwear
Outdated eyeglass prescriptions and worn, ill-fitting shoes both contribute meaningfully to fall risk but are easy to overlook. An annual vision check and properly fitted, non-slip footwear are simple steps with real impact.
Consider a medical alert system
If a fall does happen, a wearable medical alert device can significantly reduce the time before help arrives, which matters both for physical outcomes and for peace of mind for family members who cannot be present at all times.
When home modifications are not enough
Sometimes a series of falls, or even one serious fall, signals that home modifications alone will not provide adequate safety going forward. If this describes your family's situation, it may be worth exploring assisted living communities designed specifically with fall prevention and rapid response in mind.
